DawnTown 2008: Waterworks, an international architecture competition for a new waterworks building in Downtown Miami. DawnTown's mission is to help tell the story of Downtown Miami's demographic, cultural, and architectural transformation to the world, and to bring creative ideas in urban design to Downtown Miami. Teams from Miami to Greece to Finland to South Korea have registered for the competition.

The competition invites creative ideas to transform an existing pump station in Bicentennial Park. One of Miami’s signature parks, into a waterworks building that would be an asset to the aesthetics of Downtown Miami and provides exhibit space for public information about water conservation.
Bicentennial Park is slated for a multibillion dollar transformation into Museum Park, an expansive new green oasis and campus for new homes for Miami Art Museum and the Miami Museum of Science. Competitors are asked to rethink the envelope of the pump station –symbolically, cosmetically and functionally.

A new enclosure shall be designed to “re-wrap” the existing structure, make it more attractive and better-integrated with the redesigned boulevard and the master plan for the future Bicentennial Park. The competition also touches on many issues that are key to not only the unique circumstances of the City of Miami but to architecture in general: urbanism, the environment, and adaptive re-use.

The winners will be announced during Art Basel Miami Beach. The award ceremony will take place in Downtown Miami on Friday, December 5, 2008.  The event will feature the presentation of the DawnTown Award, sponsored by the Miami Downtown Development Authority (DDA), as well as first and second runners-up.
