City of Miami Parks and Recreation Invites Teens to Dive-In PDF Imprimir E-mail
15.07.2008

Reminiscent of the days gone by, when teens gathered at the beach for a beach side movie, the City of Miami Parks and Recreation Department has decided to do the same but Miami style! On July 15th from 8pm - 10pm, Grapeland Water Park, 1550 NW 37 Avenue, will open after hours for a Teen Only Dive In Movie. 300 teens ages 13 - 17 will be allowed in for $5 per person to enjoy a viewing of "Lady in the Water" while they swim.

"This is our opportunity to directly target the teens and give them something safe to do while making them feel special" said Ernest Burkeen, Director of Parks "One of our biggest challenges today is programming for teens, getting them engaged and off the video games and away from the streets, this gives them entertainment and positive social interactions."

During normal operating hours Grapeland Water Park only allows teens accompanied by and adult to enter the facility, thus making their enjoyment of the park limited to what their parents will allow. While the event is dedicated just to teens, the supervision will be just as strict by Parks staff but it will give the teens in attendance an opportunity to feel a little more freedom.

The Teen Dive-In Movie is the first of three Teen Only events planned for this summer at the Grapeland Water Park. On July 29 from 8.30pm to 10.30pm teens are invited for the to enjoy the Teen Pool Party which will include volleyball tournaments, swimming relay races, music, free snow cones and more. On August 14 from 8.30pm - 10.30pm teens can escape to Hawaii during the Teen Night Luau. They can test their hula and limbo skills, celebrate the tropics with tropical fruit and have a tiki good time.

Space will be limited at these events and parents will be responsible for making sure their children gained admission to the event and to pick them up promptly at the end. For more information about the events residents can call (305) 960-2950.
