Hialeah, Florida - Mayor Julio Robaina and the Hialeah City Council at tomorrow's council meeting, will have a 2nd reading on an ordinance that would give Seniors in Hialeah an additional $25,000 in homestead exemption, making the total homestead exemption $75,000.
Mayor Julio Robaina & the City Council initiated the ordinance to increase the homestead exemption for seniors by another $25,000, to help those most in need of financial relief. Qualifying for the additional homestead exemption are senior citizens, 65 years of age or older, who have legal or equitable title real estate located within the City of Hialeah and who maintain permanent residence there. Currently there are over 7,000 homes in Hialeah with senior exemptions, saving homeowners an estimated $1,118,000. If approved, the ordinance will go into effect January 1st, 2009.
Mayor Robaina sees this ordinance, "as a way to help Seniors in our community save their homes." He also adds," these people are retired, living on fixed incomes and social security is just not enough. They've been living in these HOMES for years and I would NOT LIKE to see them lose them because they can't afford their HOME'S taxes."
The media is invited to attend the Hialeah Council meeting which will take place tomorrow at The City of Hialeah Council Chambers, 3rd floor, 501 Palm Avenue at 7:00 p.m.,. For more information please call the Communications & Special Events Department at 305-889-5701. |
