Hialeah, Florida - The City of Hialeah, Mayor Julio Robaina and the Hialeah City Council hosted the Second Annual Mayor's Gala, " Polynesian Sunset," which was title sponsored and presented by Vista HealthPlans this past Friday, April 18, 2008 at McDonald Aquatic Center.

As promised, the Gala this year was bigger and better and proved to be a total success.  Aimed once again at helping the battle against cancer, the Gala benefitted two very special organizations, the American Cancer Society and La Liga Contra el Cáncer.  The guests had the opportunity to enjoy an exciting Polynesian Show and enjoyed a luscious Hawaiian dinner followed by lively music played by DJ Radius.  The Master of Ceremony for the evening was the distinguished anchor of Univision News, Guillermo Benitez.

Closely affected by this disease himself, the Mayor lost his father to cancer just last August. "I know the distressing effects cancer can have on the person and his family because I, myself, experienced it with my dad.  That is why I am proud to be here tonight supporting such great organizations that can help with treatment, support and recoveries."

The day after the Mayor's Gala, Mayor Robaina presented one of the organizations, the American Cancer Society, with a check for $50,000 at its annual event Relevo Por La Vida de Hialeah, the Spanish initiative of Relay for Life, which took place at Goodlet Park.

Last year, the Gala alone raised $85,000 in donations; this year, the City of Hialeah exceeded last year's expectations raising $100,000 to help the American Cancer Society and La Liga Contra el Cancer battle against this devastating disease.

Over 700 people attended this year's Gala.  Mayor Robaina was very happy and proud to see such a big crowd supporting this noble cause. "I thank every one of you and the sponsors of this event for being here helping these organizations that do everything possible to fight against this devastating disease that can attack anybody regardless of gender, age or nationality," he expressed.
