Miami, FL--- The City of Miami Office of Sustainable Initiatives, in conjunction with international architectural/engineering firm Burt Hill Inc., has successfully completed the first phase for creation of the Miami Green Lab and the Miami Green Alliance. The Green Lab will be a resource for the community to learn about new technologies in green design by providing a space and information that will help shape a greener future for South Florida.
The City of Miami commissioned Burt Hill to conduct a feasibility study of the Miami Green Lab including a preliminary assessment of the LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification based on the US Green Building Council rating system.
The company also advised the City of Miami in the preliminary stages to create the framework for the Miami Green Alliance. This work will provide the foundation for the Green Lab as a public space dedicated to learning and the research of sustainable alternatives as well as the development of a more responsive and eco-friendly community.
“The Miami Green Lab will offer community access to the latest advances in environmentally-sustainable products and practices” said Mayor Manny Diaz. “By enhancing the culture of an environmentally friendly society and demonstrating the City’s commitment to sustainable growth, the Miami GreenAlliance will promote a greener future for our future generations.
Working directly with the community in the Miami Green Lab, a showroom / classroom environment, Green Alliance members will explain and demonstrate sustainable building practices. This initiative will address one of the most important challenges facing the sustainability movement; namely, the information gap between green products and potential users who may not be aware of the possibilities.
The Miami Green Lab’s mission is to develop effective communication channels between green product manufacturers and the Miami community. It will strive to integrate economic, social and environmental performance by bringing together scholars, community leaders, homeowners, developers and building professionals, and helping them interact with product manufacturers.
“The Miami Green Lab will become a resource for green education and an incubator of new ideas in the City of Miami, generating in the community a sense of ownership for the environment and of pro-active responsibility for the sustainable growth of the city and the region.” said Burt Hill’s Miami Regional Manager, Julian Palacio LEED AP.
Burt Hill is one of the largest A/E firms in the country and a leader in sustainable design with more than 40 years of experience in green research. It is the first A/E member of the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) and has worked on such undertakings as the greening of the White House, and master planning of the first community in the country based on principles of sustainability.
Mayor Manny Diaz is leading a proactive and ambitious environmental program in the City of Miami to clean streets, waterways, brown fields and storm drains, while improving air and water quality. To accomplish this goal, Mayor Diaz launched the first ever Citywide Tree Master Plan and created the City of Miami Green Commission. To coordinate these and all other environmental programs, Mayor Diaz created the Miami Office of Sustainable Initiatives.
