Miami—The Miami office of ADD Inc, a premier architecture and design firm headquartered in Cambridge, Mass., has completed a $3.5 million renovation of the renowned Jackie Gleason Theater of the Performing Arts at 1700 Washington Ave. in Miami Beach. The new LiveNation venue has been renamed The Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater and features a “Rock & Roll” design concept. LiveNation, the world’s largest live music company, acquired the theater earlier this year.
They commissioned ADD Inc to transform the theater to attract touring rock musicians and other performance artists in South Florida. With a capacity for 2,700, the theater will host its grand reopening in October with Ricky Martin headlining with his celebrated “Black & White” tour.
ADD Inc’s design for the transformed music hall features three new levels at the front orchestra and new VIP lounges customized with 12-foot high murals that capture the drama of rock performances. Lush, richly colored furnishings, carpet, sparkling chandeliers, new bars and concession stands set the stage.
“We have incorporated the legendary Fillmore brand to fit the music theater style,” explained Jonathan Cardello, principal and director of the Miami office.
“It’s an exciting blend of classic art deco with an updated rock and roll aesthetic. Red walls adorned with pictorials of Southern Florida’s rock history coupled with extra touches like collectible posters distributed after shows really create a warm and welcoming feeling.”
Since 1964, The Jackie Gleason Theater has hosted some of the entertainment industry’s brightest stars, including Jackie Gleason, who filmed his TV variety show there, as well as Lenny Kravitz, Elvis Costello, David Copperfield, various national and international symphonies and touring Broadway shows. The Fillmore Miami Beach at the Jackie Gleason Theater joins five other Fillmore-branded venues across the US, including San Francisco, Denver, New York, Philadelphia, and Detroit.
“We are thrilled to be re-opening the Jackie Gleason Theater under the Fillmore banner,” said Neil Jacobsen, president of LiveNation Miami. “We have worked hard to make significant improvements to the theater that will enable us to draw world-class talent to The Fillmore Miami Beach at The Jackie Gleason Theater for many years to come. We are confident that music fans are going to love the renovated venue.”
Other local projects ADD Inc is working on include 321 North, the $350 million redevelopment of the Plantation Fashion Mall; The Fountains, a 415,000 square-foot community shopping plaza in Plantation; and the environmentally-responsible Smart Growth master plan of The Village of Marbella in Coconut Creek.
